Capturing the nightlife of three Texas Hill Country “river cities” Austin, San Marcos and New Braunfels, listeners float down these beautiful rivers, guided along by two blues musician friends (featuring solo alto saxophone and trumpet). Various motifs appear throughout, from drifting on a paddleboard looking up at the skyscrapers and cliffside villas of Austin, to the upbeat feel tubers have while floating on gamedays in San Marcos and those big band vibes of New Braunfels on summer nights.
Originally inspired by conversations with a close friend and written for his hill country middle school varsity wind ensemble as a Grade 3 concert band piece. South River City Blues is designed introduce intermediate students to the basic blues scale pattern, alternating passages of triple and duple subdivisions and to be learned quickly for spring concerts!
